Reviewing A Newspaper Article

I recently read an article in The Morning Call titled "Forks Township officials have no beef with McDonald's" from the January 8 edition. The article, which is located on the seventh page of the News section, explains a plan to build a McDonald's fast-food restaurant in Forks Township by the end of 2014.

Written by freelance writer Kevin Duffy, the article addresses a number of issues that McDonald's is facing regarding the building of its restaurant. The restaurant's proposed sign, type of roof and parking requirement does not meet the necessary demands by the township. Overall, the writer does a solid job of describing the issues at hand in a straight-forward manner. The writing is tight and clean, and the readers understand what problems McDonald's may face moving forward.

While the author has his strong points throughout the article, I feel some information is left out, which may be because of a lack of space. He does include a number of surrounding attractions to the proposed McDonald's, but I would like to know if there was a previous building in place of where the restaurant is set to be built. I also feel the quotes used by zoning officer Tim Weis are short and simple. While this could be beneficial in a limited amount of space, the use of more detailed quotes would liven up the story.

  1. Todd,

From what I read here, I noticed that you did a review of an article that you found in a newspaper. My original thoughts of the assignment, as Dr.Massie gave instructions to my class, were to find an article in a local newspaper that you thought drew upon viewers attention. After doing so you were supposed to go to the front page of the same paper and review the front page story. After reviewing both articles, we were asked to tell why the front page story was in fact put on the front page, while the other story was not. Although your post does a pretty good job of critiquing a story, I do not believe that this was the assignment.

  2. I thought the article that you chose to review was a good article. The only thing that I see was wrong with this that it didn't follow the instructions that we were given in class. I think that you only reviewed one article say on the cover of the paper and then never reviewed an article inside the actual. paper. The point was to review each one inside and one on the cover and explain why the cover article was there and why the one inside could of been on the cover. I just think next time you just need to make sure your clear on the directions.

  3. Cole and Alexis,
Thanks for the feedback, it's much appreciated. This blog post was the second one we were supposed to complete by picking a single article and reviewing it on the blog, from what I remember. I completed the blog post you are talking about in which we were supposed to compare the two stories, however, my dashboard wasn't allowing me to post it to the site. I was able to locate my blog but was unable to post anything. Therefore, I sent the post to Dr. Massie in an email. I found the problem I was having before, and I will post that post, Blog Post 3, now.

    Thanks again for the comments.
